"The rise of the term coincided with the growing independent arts scene in the mid ’90s"

Maybe you should do a bit of research before you publish articles such as these. The term actually originated in the 1950's with the beat generation as a term to negatively describe white Americans trying to act like African Americans. It has since been adopted from the early noughties up until today to describe anything deemed alternative only as a way to denounce it as being forced and inauthentic. It's a word in which its use grants the accuser instant gratification through distancing themselves from such a person. This is obvious from the fact that those being described as hipsters are the first to deject such a claim. People should honestly take a look at themselves before throwing around such a term so liberally as it is inteneded as a title to offend.

As well intentioned as they are, minimum wages actually hurt the very people that they are aimed to help and I was suggest actually lead to unemployment for many of these people.

My figures may be slightly out here but the minimum wage in Australian is currently $15.51 per hour. When the government introduces such a rate, they preclude all of those people in Australia from getting a job that can not produce an employer any more than $15.51 per hour in value. What if i wanted to work but i could only produce $13 per hour in value to an employer but the government makes it illegal for any employer to employ me?

Think about it on a more macro level. The effective payment for those on the dole is $6.49 per hour. How many entrepreneurs in Australian could employ someone who is currently on the dole for say $10 per hour and put them to productive use but cant because of minimum wage?

The benefits would be incredible; It would nearly double the individuals income, increase our country's productivity, lower the burden on the private sector through lower taxes and it would reduce unemployment. But unfortunately, entrepreneurs are prevented or disincentived from doing this because they are forced to pay at least $15.51 per hour (which is invariably over $18-19 per hour when you take into consideration all the other associated regulatory costs such as payroll tax etc) for someone who may only produce value of say $10 per hour. In fact our government would actually sue and probably even jail (if deemed severe enough) someone for trying to do this.

Basic economics shows that if you increase the cost of something then demand for it declines. Therefore, if you increase the cost of labour, demand for it will decline. Look at Bluescope...unions have been in there for years pushing up the cost of labour. No wonder only a fraction of their members have a job there now!

So as well intentioned as they are, you are minimum wage laws are, does the cost v benefit argument stack up? It is worth having high wages if no one has a job or would it be better for more people to have a job?
