Student athletes to descend on UOW

Two and half thousand student athletes will converge on UOW for the Eastern University Games July 7-11 to compete in a range of sports.

The event is the Eastern conference and will be held simultaneously with the Southern conference in Ballarat and the Northern conference in Brisbane.

The universities will field teams in seventeen events ranging from modified versions of AFL, Rugby League and Rugby Union to Lawn bowls.

Twenty-two universities and colleges will attend including Massey University from New Zealand.

Fiona Cullen from Australian University Sport said that the event is an important chance for the universities to come together and intermingle.

Sport is the main focus, but “building character and leadership skills is also very important”, she said.

Teams will be fighting for the right to compete at the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast. 41 universities will compete in 31 sports over six days from September 29 to October 4. University of Technology Sydney took out the national title last year

The national surfing event will also be held at Wollongong over the same period, bringing Australia’s best student surfers to Wollongong.
Destination Wollongong and Wollongong Local Council are major event partners ensuring that competitors are well received and comfortable in the local area.

The event will be a major influx to the community bringing not just competitors; but also coaches and spectators.
Lord Mayor, Gordon Bradbury praised the event in the Illawarra aat the launch and pointed out how important it will be for Wollongong as a whole.

“We have a world-class university here and this is our chance to showcase what we’ve got”, he said.

“The whole event will be an influx to the community and the local government has realized this and got behind the whole event”, said Fiona Cullen.

The trials have now ended for all sports, so if you haven’t got yourself onto a team yet, you’ll be spectating this year.

The event will kick off with an opening ceremony on Sunday July 7 featuring electro duo Peking Duk at Uni Bar.
