Uni set to put mateship on hold

Uni players are ready to face Fairy Meadow

Mateship will be put on hold for 70 minutes this Sunday when University host Fairy Meadow in round 20 of the Illawarra Men’s Hockey.

Uni currently sit in second spot on the ladder and will go into the clash with momentum behind them after they snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over arch rivals and competition leaders Albion Park.

Uni Captain-coach Simon Beaton said last week was a pleasing result for his side.

“It was great to get a good win over first place and we’re really happy about the result in the lead up to the finals.”

With the finals just around the corner, uni will face a stern test from their cross-town rivals, but Beaton said his side is looking forward to the clash.

“We’re pretty good mates with most of them and we play with some of them up in the Sydney competition, so it’s always good to play against them.”

Fairy Meadow will be playing for pride as they currently sit in fifth spot and are unable to make up to make up a points deficit to make the semi-finals.

Although uni will go into the match as strong favourites, with their finals berth already secured, table positioning isn’t likely to matter and Uni are expecting a tough contest.

“We actually had a draw with them last time we played here, so it should be a good game and we’re not taking anything for granted,” said Beaton.

In other fixtures in the Illawarra Men’s Hockey this week, bottom of the table Dapto host Mittagong, Albion Park are at home against Robertson and Wests will make a trip to the Southern Highlands to play Bowral.
